Meme Reflection
For my meme assignment I chose the theme to be “Meteorologist.” I chose that theme because my major is currently meteorology and it is relatable to my life. People tend to have varying views on meteorologists and what they do so I felt it was suitable theme for this assignment.
In the top left picture on the meme it is captioned, “What my friends think I do” along with a picture of a broadcast meteorologist with the temperature of 69 degrees on a map in the background. I felt that picture to be suitable for that caption because when I tell friends that I am a meteorology major automatically an image of a weatherman pops into their heads. The number 69 is associated with an immature joke that young people think is funny, which is how my friends feel. That picture represents how my friends instantly think I am a weatherman and that they think of it jokingly. The top middle picture is captioned, “What my parents think I do” and is of a weatherman out in a snowstorm. I used that caption with that picture because as a parent, a one might assume their kid is doing something dangerous anytime they go out and about. That picture represents the dangers that can come with the job of meteorologist and what parents assume come with the job. The top right box contains a picture of a storm chaser with a tornado in the background and is captioned, “What society thinks I do.” I put that caption with that picture because TV shows and movies associate meteorologists with intense action packed events such as chasing tornadoes and flying into hurricanes. That is not always the case of course, not all meteorologists chase storms. The bottom left section has a picture of a scientist with kids while making “clouds” on the ground as a fun experiment and it was captioned “What kids think I do.” That picture was captioned that because kids associate weathermen to be happy cheery people that visit their school and do cool experiments, at least that is what I thought as a kid. The bottom middle picture is captioned “What I think I do” and is represented by a picture of a meteorologist on the news displaying a map. There is not a whole lot of explaining that needs to be done with this picture. It basically represents that I think I am a normal meteorologist on the weather and that nothing weird is going on. That is what any meteorologists would want to think of themselves; that they are good at what they do. The last picture is captioned “What I really do” and has a picture of a meteorologist looking at weather models on the computer. That is realistically what a meteorologist spends most of their time doing. Looking at models and following data is how a meteorologist forecasts the weather.
I hope that by creating this meme people will end up realizing there is a lot more to meteorology than talking on TV, creating wrong forecasts, and chasing storms. They are hard working individuals that had to go through rigorous course work to get the degree. If I had to rate my meme I would give it a 9. I definitely stand by my choices in pictures, however I can see how some people might feel unsure about one based on their personal opinions and experiences.
