A HUMANIZING EXPERIENCE
Seeing how I am a science major, taking a course that would force me to make the best of my writing abilities was not super exciting to me. I was expecting a semester where I would just slide by in my writing course to get it out of the way. However, now looking back on the semester I have realized that this class was overall a good experience for me that I am very glad to have been a part of.
The two assignments that influenced me the most in this class were the Practicum Day-Book observations and the Annotated Bibliography. Since this class allowed for us to choose our own topics for the projects, I decided to make them science based with meteorology, so that I could also take that opportunity to do something worthwhile in my major. For my Practicum I observed Ricky Matthews, a senior meteorology student here at UNCC. By doing so, I was able to learn a lot about meteorology and UNCC’s program here before I actually have taken any of the in depth meteorology courses. Ricky not only taught me about weather, but he told me what it is like to run a UNCC Weather account on Twitter, where he deals with public opinions being thrown at him. I believe Ricky is a truly a part of the human experience since he pursues a passion of his and overcomes the battles and struggles that come along with it. He taught me to develop a passion for something I care about and that the hard work I put into it will pay off. The other assignment that affected me in this course was the Annotated Bibliography. While researching the struggles that people meteorologists face daily in their field with forecast accuracy and public interpretation of said forecast, I was able to see a glimpse of some of the challenges I might have to endure once I have earned my degree. Those challenges will come, and I will become stressed by them, but I am thankful that I am becoming aware of them now so that I can face them and be prepared.
Other assignments that I am glad I had the opportunity to have experienced in this class were the mini project of reading The Lovely Bones. That book was definitely one of the most unique books I have ever read and it truly gave insight to what the human experience is abut. Susie was ripped from the earth and life after her brutal murder and the books journey as Susie learned to accept her death and see her family deal with it and eventually moving on later in life. This represents a human experience by teaching us that struggles will always be apart of our life but overtime things will get better and eventually one moves on. Life is a never-ending learning experience from the moment we are born until our last breath. Reading and writing about The Lovely Bones allowed me to think outside of the box, learn the meaning behind certain parts of the book, and how to write a cohesive essay about the realizations made.
Even the smaller assignments that we did like Many Mayas, Pivot Questions, etc., taught us the importance of each person being unique and experiencing life in different ways. One cannot truly be a part of a human experience until they learn to accept the realties of life and learn to overcome obstacles, so learning about each persons unique role in my own human experience is part of what makes it human. I did not have to write as much as I thought I would during this advanced course, but I am glad to have learned the lessons that I did while being a student in this 1103 writing course. I my never have to take a writing course ever again in my life but I am thankful to have had this class and its lessons be a part of my human experience
